Fibromyalgia does not define me. Fight like a girl!Fibromyalgia the pain no one can see branching from the traumatic pain no one else can heal!

This week's email brought about an interesting request. I received a letter from journalist Gabriela Bess seeking to interview me about Fibromyalgia. I had no idea as to why exactly at the moment, but I enjoy encouraging other women to seek out natural or alternative cures instead of using pharmaceuticals in treating their Fibromyalgia.

The article titled Female Pain: Living with an Illness That No One Believes In was a mixture of both the fact that often nobody believes we truly experience the pain and how physical/emotional trauma in adolescence can trigger Fibromyalgia later in life. Very interesting connection I had never heard previously.

I was chosen for the interview because I had wrote an article before about my own experience with rape, PTSD, hyper-vigilance, and fibromyalgia having some relations.

I hope you will find time to read the article if you struggle with Fibromyalgia or know somebody who does.

Fibromylagia - Sleep Disorder
Buongiorno!

Studies have come out linking Fibromyalgia to limitation of inspiratory airflow during sleep. I have long wondered if Fibromyalgia is a sleep disorder, but my personal results do not match the findings of some studies.

My sleep study showed that I don't go into the deep stages of sleep, which not only causes general fatigue, but does not allow my muscles to properly recover. However, I did not show any signs of sleep apnea.

At first we thought my sleep disorder was physical in nature, which would mean possible growth hormone injections (very costly), but a specialist finally pinpointed the probable cause of my sleep disorder.

It is called Hypervigilance Sleep Disorder. Many people with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), such as soldiers, suffer from it. While I have never served in the military, I was stranger raped while out walking, as a teen, in what was considered a small, safe town. It traumatized me so strongly, that I attempted suicide, because I could not get past it.

Real Men Don't Rape! Only Animals Rape!
Eight years and one day later I went through another rape by somebody I trusted and who claimed to love me. That pushed me over the edge and again made me feel suicidal (though that time I did not carry through on my thoughts, because I had children who didn't deserve to suffer that loss). I have never felt safe to be alone with that person again and it destroyed any potential future. Those two rapes destroyed a huge part of me. I was a mess in my head for years after that. I wanted desperately to numb the pain, but I never did turn to drugs or alcohol, instead I forced myself to deal with the reality. I felt incapable of being truly loved and settled for a person who violently abused me.

When I healed my thinking over those two rapes, and the violent abuse thereafter, I thought the PTSD was over. I mean I don't have anxiety or panic-attacks, etc. So until this specialist came along, I never knew why I was so fatigued. My entire family can tell you they can't usually tip toe in a room where I am sleeping without startling me awake. They symptom of hyper-vigilance remained from my former PTSD.

The specialist and I came up with a plan (not involving prescription drugs, as I don't want that in my life) which now helps me sleep much better. Sleeping better equals less pain. I had already figured out which food and supplements hurt or help my fibromyalgia through research, trial and error.

(If anybody reading this has been through rape, please know that life can get much better in time. You are welcome to write me! xoxoxox)

But I digress, back to the study by sleep researchers, Avram R. Gold, M.D., at SUNY Stony Brook in New York, and Joan Broderick, Ph.D.

With six million Americans suffering from Fibromyalgia, this means 2% of our population. In my opinion, it's become epidemic. Something is triggering it. I still have my theories on food and toxins, but sleep could very well play into the big picture.

Out of the twenty-eight female participants with fibromyalgia of this sleep study, all but one showed limited inspiratory airflow. Twenty-six of them resulted in UARS (Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome), which is a mild form of sleep apnea. One of them actually had sleep apnea. Those treated for their sleep disorders did seem to show improvement.

But do sleep disorders cause Fibromalgia or vice versa? The jury is still out, but the research is pouring in. To learn more on this issue, please read: http://doctorstevenpark.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Sleep.Dr_.Gold_.pdf

Fibromyalgia Pain - Mystery Solved - Excessive Sensory Nerve Fibers
Fibromyalgia Pain - Mystery Solved - Excessive Sensory Nerve Fibers!

This is HUGE, breaking, and possibly good news to any one who suffers from Fibromyalgia. What causes the pain of fibromyalgia? The scientific discovery has been made. No longer does one have to feel ridiculed for a disease that is "in one's head," when in truth, there is a published medical journal finding - excessive sensory nerve fibers.

About 13 years ago I was diagnosed after giving birth to my fourth child and then crippling up to the point I thought my entire body was falling apart.

Fibromyalgia Medical Discovery - caused from
enormous increase in sensory nerve
fibers at specific sites within the
blood vessels of the skin.

I had a positive ANA (Antinuclear Antibodies) tither, elevated ESR (Erthocyte Sedimentation Rate) which shows inflammation, amongst other issues that led my doctors to test me for Multiple Sclerosis and Lupus.

They agreed upon me having an auto-immune issue, but found no consensus, except that I had Fibromyalgia, Lichen Sclerosus, some weird issues with my blood sugar fluctuations and thyroid reactions, but nothing that fit inside of their box of common diagnosis.

Magnesium, my #1 supplement for Fibromyalgia.

I tried many things to overcome this debilitating pain, as I was not about to succumb to their pharmaceuticals that would not heal me, but rather mask my symptoms while giving me all new side effects. I gave up all artificial sweeteners, MSG, etc. I tried various supplements. In the end, the one thing that helped me more than any other was Magnesium.

And if I needed muscle recovery at night, then 5-htp or Rhodiola Rosea also offered some relief (*important note, please do not try 5-htp if you are taking any SSRI medication or you could suffer/die from Serotonin Syndrome).

Researchers from INTiDYN have discovered that Fibromyalgia is not all in our heads after all, but stems from a rational, biological source consisting of excessive nerve fibers that deal with opening and closing the shunts responsible for blood flow to the capillaries.

This makes sense to me. My capillaries have often broke and seem very weak compared to most females. This has been an issue since I was at least in my early teens. Also I have endured many nerve pain issues. One doctor even tested me and found that I was being honest that ultrasound in my back actually caused me horrible nerve pain, as do injections in my gluteus shoot pain down my butt and legs and make it were I cannot walk correctly for weeks following.
tiny muscular valves, called arteriole-venule (AV) shunts, which form a direct connection between arterioles and venules.

The American Academy of Pain Medicine published this article on the Fibromyalgia Medical Discovery by Integrated Tissue Dynamics on June 14th, 2013.

"What the team uncovered was an enormous increase in sensory nerve fibers at specific sites within the blood vessels of the skin. These critical sites are tiny muscular valves, called arteriole-venule (AV) shunts, which form a direct connection between arterioles and venules (see diagram)."

What does this mean for the future of patients who suffer from Fibromyalgia? Perhaps the discovery of why some people have the excessive nerve fibers and why those numbers are increasing, how to prevent the disease, a scientific way to test for the disease, and most likely new treatments and/or a cure.

Have you or somebody you love suffered from Fibromyalgia? Have they been doubted that it is legit?
